An Adelaide icon with a great location, Botanic Bar is situated on the corner of East and North Terraces, and has recently gone through a resurgence. With its classic decor, it feels like you’re drinking in an old chateau or private library. One of the oldest hotels in Adelaide, it’s the kind of place where you’ll find the smaller details of years gone by, like the branded boxes of matches and a properly well stocked cocktail bar – in fact, it is one of the few bars to still supply flaming cocktail. It also features an intimate back bar, stocking only local beers, seeing Botanic Bar suit all types. With plenty of outside seating for ‘people watching’, surrounded by vines and lanterns, this inviting setting attracts a beautiful crowd. Botanic Bar is a great place to start the night, however it is also known for getting line-ups, meaning it’s not a bad place to stay on for the night.

Botanic Bar opened their highly anticipated Thai restaurant, Golden Boy, in the old side bar in late-2013. Golden Boy serves delicious Thai food (one of the best in Adelaide we must say) from 6:00 PM until late. Bookings are necessary for groups of 6 people or more; however, walk-ins are encouraged by the staff. This place is always bustling on weekends and smells delicious the moment you step inside.

Another restaurant joined the Botanic Bar family in 2014 – Africola is the latest project by award-winning restaurateur Duncan Welgemoed, and offers the flavours of South Africa by using a lot of ash and fire to cook the modern African dishes. Think “Afro-centric with James Brown throwing his flavour on it”, as Welgemoed put it. You can also expect open spaces, a bar when you can get a great drink after work and world music that suits the restaurant perfectly.
